When it comes to search engine optimization, many tend to spend more time on website optimization. It does help in SEO terms, but link building plays major role in getting higher SERP ranking or increase page rank. So, try to keep the onsite optimization level at minimal and concentrate more on offsite which is link building. The basic onsite SEO that most pros recommends is meta tags. Let's get the drill on how to optimize your meta tags for your website. Good meta tags does help in ranking and increase the chance of click-through from search engine to our website. If you are the type of person who hates building links, then you should optimize your meta tags. Remember, each page should have unique meta title, meta description and meta keywords that represents best for the page.

1. Meta Title

Meta title is one of the most important tags to consider to get better site ranking in Google. No other meta tags does help in SERP ranking other than meta title tag. So, make sure you read this portion clearly. Writing perfect title tags for your website need some research skills. A good title tag is less competitive, long tail and descriptive, explains better about overall page, not heavily keyword stuffed and readability level at primary school standard. You can even run some keyword analysis in Google Adwords Keyword tool for low competitive keyword phrase selection. Or, type in Google search box for the terms that users often search.

The recommendation list in search box shows that the commonly searched keywords by other users. Selecting those keywords that already in Google keyword suggest in search box is a wise idea for your title tag. Also, the beginning of title tag is the most crucial part. Use your vital keywords first in line or beginning of the phrase of title tag to get highest SEO weight in search results. Try to keep your title tag in less than 10 words. Usually, I suggest 7-10 words length in title tag. Avoid writing long titles as it won't be shown in search results or web browser. If you are planning to create a brand name, make use of the brand name at the end of each title tag you create. For example; "This Is An Example Of Title Tag - BrandName".

2. Meta Description

Meta description is not considered as ranking factor. Meta description does not affect your SERP ranking in Google. However, meta description is the place where you can fill out the important keywords that you are unable to fill in title tags. Make sure that you don't repeat the same set of words that have been used in meta title for meta description. It is purely a waste of space. Meta description is where search engine users read about your page. It should be a synopsis of your overall page. It must be convincing the readers to click on your link. That is why meta description is closely related to click-through rate. A good meta description will attract higher number of click-through rate.

3. Meta Keywords

This is one neglected tag that most webmaster tend to spend a lot of time. Google does not use meta keywords in their ranking algorithm. However, Bing still uses meta keywords in their ranking system. If you have no time to blog or even write meta tags, you can ignore meta keywords completely. Unlike other two meta tags (title and description), meta keywords is where you can specifically create an array of keyword phrases like "Keyword phrase1, keyword phrase2, keyword phrase3, keyword phrase4, ". You don't have to write any description here. However, many webmasters tend to make a same mistake here and get penalize from Google for similar reason.

It is called "Keyword Stuffing". Each page should have around 5-7 keyword phrases in keyword tag. Stuffing 10s or 20s of keywords in keyword tag with the hope to get rank for all those keywords will only lead to penalty. Too bad that meta keywords does not help in SEO but stuffing keywords in it will lead to penalty. This is the nature of meta keywords where most webmasters makes mistake. So, I would strongly suggest to leave this tag empty than stuffing with 10s or 100s of keywords which may lead to negative effect. If you are confident, then get 3-5 keyword phrases on average for each page on your website. Do not overdo it.
